I wish I lived in the Tampa area and could be present for the live discussions, but I'm excited about being a part of this online group. I'm especially interested in reading books on science, philosophy, religion, anthropology, history, cultural diversity, and art. I also enjoy reading biographies. I'm really open to other ideas as well. Cheryl

Posts: 103 05/31/02 09:06:38	Hi Cheryl (and hi to you too, Christopher). I'm Greg. I've been helping Chris get BookTalk up and running these last couple weeks. He's really done most of the work ... what I do mostly is sit around with a bottle of burbon and a pile of rubber bands which I shoot at him while he works diligently on the website. It helps him concentrate. I'm 32 and live in Tampa. I have an English degree from The University of South Florida and currently work as a Technical Writer for a software company (I check the want ads for "Itinerant Philosopher" positions every day, but alas, no luck). My interests include science, philosophy, art, history, and music. As far as reading goes, I like anything that is written with intelligence and passion. Whether it's a history of middle-eastern tribal conflict or a scifi adventure novel, what captures my interest is quality writing that has intensity and integrity. Conversely, poorly-written "style over substance" books annoy the hell out of me regardless of subject. A flashy cover with a popular name on it doesn't amount to good reading; passionless garbage is passionless garbage no matter what Oprah says. Anyway, I'm glad to see people introducing themselves. I hope we have some readings and discussions that you find interesting, Cheryl. G

Posts: 0 06/03/02 12:06:27	Hi, my name is Stacy, i'm 33 years old and I live in the Tampa Bay area. I saw the ad. on the backpage of the W.P. and I thought I should check it out. I wish I could impress you all with my many literary conquests, but as I am in school and studying for a HUGE test for work the most recent works i've had time for are Psychology, Human Biology and Histotechnology: a self instructional text. Makes for some fun reading, huh? Actually I have been squeezing two books in, the first one is A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, which is great. It's by Dave Eggers, it's his memoir, and it is written so intelligently and is so funny that I actually find myself laughing out loud (no, really). When you read his work, it's like reading how he really speaks, it's not corny or contrived. It's not fake. The other book i'm enjoying is Don't Know Much About History by Kenneth C. Davis. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, "CliffsNotes for history", but it's a really great read. Main historical events explained in a sometimes tongue in cheek manner makes it alot of fun. And it was recommended by my grandfather, the utmost authority on history. I do have my guilty pleasures, such as Elmore Leonard, and (yikes) Patricia Cornwell (it's all the forensic stuff). I think the whole "group" thing interested me because I would be able to learn about new and different books and be able to exchange thoughts, ideas, and opinions with others. It's a way to meet some potentially interesting, thought provoking people so I thought i'd give it a shot.

Chris and I both felt that we wanted to canvass BookTalk members from among those who are seeking tatoo removal, escorts, lawyers, or - and this is the scary part - all three. Anyway (and all joking aside), I'm sure you'll find some good ideas for books around here as well as people to exchange ideas and opinions with. I look forward to seeing your input when we get around to book selection (you can see what we've been kicking around so far in the "Ideas and Suggestions" section) and perhaps to seeing you at our local group meetings as well. G

You're right, it's fortunate I saw the ad. considering that the whole back part of the W.P. has become a very scary place that is not for the faint of heart. So it's good that I check that part out due solely to it's entertainment value, otherwise I may have missed out. It looks like it is going to take a bit of time to get the word out in the Tampa Bay area, but hang in there and this community will be active in due time. So what does ltlmzcbw mean? I've pondered those letters for a few days now and all I can think of is that it is some sort of acronym. Let us know...if it isn't too personal! And I own a copy of "Don't Know Much About History" by Kenneth C. Davis too. But I have yet to read it! In fact, I own so many books I never completed. I need to exercise some control when in the bookstore, because I buy more books that I could ever complete it seems. I take it you have enjoyed the book, so maybe I'll sit down and get back into it soon. I think I tackled no more than 1/4 of the book so far. Please hang around and contribute here at BookTalk. We can all discuss the next steps for the group right here on the message board. I would like to get 6 - 8 people before we meet for the first meeting, but there isn't any real reason for this. Maybe the 4 of us can pick a book soon and start reading it together. Those of us in Florida can get together in a month, and Cheryl can pretend she is with us. lol I'm suprised the Weekly Planet ad didn't get more responses, but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it still has some life left in it. The newspaper is a weekly publication so maybe more people will respond still. Greg and I plan to put some flyers up all over the Tampa Bay area in hopes of attracting some attention, so maybe that will work. Anyway...welcome to BookTalk! Chris O'Connor

So yeah, I think i'm gonna stick around because then when the group is huge and famous globally I can say that I was right there in the beginning, how I knew you when you were nobody. And look at you now, you won't even give me the time of day! Then i'll become a bitter alcoholic married to one of the lawyers I met in the group. I'll end up divorcing him taking everything that he has and start dating the tattoo removee I met in the group! Sounds like a plan! But really, i'm looking forward to seeing what books you guys pull out of your hats. I have to admit that after looking at the lists, there are definitely some books I have never even HEARD of on them. My how I do go on, I think i'm already forging a reputation for that here. Lucaya is the name of my pit bull and my most favorite vacation spot on Grand Bahama Island. I live in Altamonte Springs, Florida, a small town just outside of Orlando. I have known Greg Neuman, one of the mastermind's behind this booktalk organization, for many years. One of my most treasured aspects of our friendship is our countless number of elaborate philosophical discussions on life...what is...what could be....and what we think of it. This is the reason why I am apart of this group. Let me give you some background info on me. I learned early on in life that I have a knack for technology and computers. Knowing that there is good money in it, I pursued it. So now, I work as a Senior Technical Analyst for a large company, and hold a Master's in Instructional Technology, along with several computer certifications. Sounds great, right? So why is it so difficult to get up in the morning to go to work? Just because you are good at something does not mean it is your calling in life. This brings me to what I hope to get out of this book discussion group. All of the formal education I have acquired has brought me personal insight, but not to the level I wish to achieve. Everything in my schooling has revolved around regimented guidelines. I am hoping that this kind of free-form, thought provoking, forum can inspire me to learn more about me and others around me, while allowing for a better understanding of the world we live in. That being said, I look forward to our discussion and am glad that we are all here. Lauren

Perhaps you can entice the others here to try a book on the Palestinian and Israel conflict. I don't know much about it, but as Americans we probably ought to invest some time researching the politics of the middle east. I know Greg has read "From Beirut to Jerusalem." Maybe that would be a good book for us all. I didn't see it on your list and from what I've heard it is rated highly.
