Posts: 1868 09/22/03 22:49:17 Indisputable BookTalk Master	Tags : None I am excited to enter the exchange of ideas here at booktalk, and look forward to following the debates and discussions...and hopefully learn a good deal about the complexities of the human heart and mind. I am a grateful graduate of Seminary, philosopher of education, and a dissenting democrat with an anarchistic socialist spirit. I also attend Church, relish in the hymns, take prayer and meditation very seriously, wrestle with the sermons, debate Scripture often, find worship and communion to be terribly precious, and make the best out of a very imperfect fellowship, of which I include my own burdens, flaws, and blemishes. My theology has been profoundly shaped by minds like Hans Kung and Rosemary Radford Reuther; as my politics have been inspired by mavericks like Noam Chomsky and Arundahti Roy; and my philosophy has been forever colored by the challenges of Friedrich Nietzsche and Walter Kaufmann; finally, my educational theory finds its roots in the theories of Howard Gardner and praxis of Paulo Freire. I come in the spirit of Eugene Debs and Dr. King, speaking from the heart of Cesar Chavez and Cornel West. Seeking the dissident in your heart.

I am not a Professor in Berkeley. I am a life skills instructor and vocational guidance counselor for a non-profit organization in San Francisco. My Students are adults from all walks of life, all unemployed, some in shelters, some recently homeless, some on parole, most in recovery, and most seeking hope in the midst of real suffering and nihilistic despair. My challenge is to mix all of this into a Class which incorporates Computer literacy with Vocational development and Personal empowerment...as well as Social revolution. Cheers

It provoked in me a life of questions and pondering that I have yet to silence. Us and Them is one of the darker pieces of the album. It paints a rather bleak portrait of our foolish propensity to violence and obtuse disregard for the welfare of others. The song talks about betrayal: being sold a bill of goods that in the end is a profound rip off. Being tricked, duped, seduced, manipulated into abandoning what is precious and real for what is empty and false. The sad state of realizing that you have been made a fool and hoodwinked into choosing crap, when you could have had gold...and this treasure was with you all along, and you threw it away for someone else's fantasy. How I wish you were here... Is he alone? Is he with others? Is he alone in his understanding: the only one who has awoken to the facade, wanting his friend/lover to wake up too? Is here a state of mind or a geographic location? Is the person to whom the song is directed in the same room, across town, in another country, no longer alive? We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, Running over the same old ground. Two lovers perhaps, going nowhere, tired of the monotonous cycle of meaningless events called a relationship: and one of the two finally tells the truth about it. No longer in denial, but speaking honestly about a relationship going nowhere. What have you found? The same old fears. Nothing new, no growth, maturing or developing into different options and directions...just the same fears. Fears of what?
