I knew it would appear as though I was trying to defend you, but really my intentions were purely selfish. (Outside the fact that it is quite apparent you need no defending.) I think the conversation is considerably more interesting and certainly more likely to be productive if it does not fall into accusations of peoples' motivations. And from what I have seen on this topic, thus far, I don't think the statement about your motivation here was accurate. If you and Mr. P. are able to work out, through your own readings and discussions, a clearer picture of what were both the secular and religious causes and justifications for the witch hunts, I benefit from the information you post. And even without having to plow through the books you two are reading, particularly on a topic that I've since put down, I can still get a hint of the information you two have consumed. See, purely self-interest.
Mad: I wasn't aware of any authors that really explored the role of gender.
Yes, that's what I meant when I said you had no knowledge, not whether or not you agreed with the gender reference I made before.
Mad: I'm of the same frame of mind as you are on this point: the fact that women were so often the target of witch accusations makes it likely that there was some element of chauvanism involved. I'm just not sure how that played out.
From what I had uncovered in my readings, I think whatever gender issues you are likely to uncover may focus solely on women. That is, it was women who largely perpetrated the accusations against other women. This is not a new phenomenon, marginalized groups attacking the same or other marginalized groups. But within the framework of each different witch hunt occurrence is surely the consideration that these were highly patriarchal societies-i.e. the chauvinism you referenced.
Mad: I'll have to check my notes to see if it's the same book you have in mind.
After reading most of the book, I think it likely I won't have much to contribute to the Deep Economy readings. As soon as I catch up on postings in the First Amendment topic, I'll try to do some reviews on this topic and pass on what I have-now that you guys have piqued my interest on this topic again. Since I was a student at the time I was reading on this topic, I think most of the books were likely to have been library books, and thus no longer in my possession.
