And I might even volunteer to be a moderator. After all, I have read the book before.

I didn't realize that this book was first published in 1934, so we'll probably find quite a few people that have already read it. So what did you think of it? And let us know about being the Discussion Leader...whenever you decide.

I've never read it before, but I'm already devouring it. Fun book.

I know you're not much into fiction, Tara, but this book should prove to be an awesome read and more like a history book then a novel. It is historical fiction, afterall.

I've just finished reading it.
I don't read a lot of historical fiction but I enjoyed reading this one. I found the coverage of the family history a little too detailed at times, and trying to follow the myriads of schemes did become a little tedious, but overall a good read, especially for someone not very familiar with Roman history. I read the sequel Claudius the God as well and I found that it raised more interesting questions than did I, Claudius for the reason that it dealt more directly with the issues relating to how power should be used. I won't give away what happens in the sequel but the development of the sequel from the first book was nicely done; I was surprised when I realised where the sequel was going. If you've made it through I, Claudius, I'd recommend reading the sequel as well. |

No kidding. I devoured I, Claudius (but will go back and re-read it to fully digest the convoluted family trees!), and picked up the sequel the other day...

I'm just worried that I won't be able to wrest the book from my husband's hands now!

I have my copy, and I read the first chapter yesterday. Took me a while to get it, mostly because I didn't especially like the Vintage edition that's out currently. So I tracked down an old hardback version in a bookstore nearby.
So far I like it. A lot in fact. That first sentence didn't especially catch my attention -- it's one I've browsed dozens of times -- but the first chapter as a whole was really intriguing. I'll have more to say later. |

When I first opened the book I said, "Oh no, I'm not going to be able to read this." But then I gave it a try and was hooked by the end of page one. I know I'm starting a little late but hopefully I'll be able to participate in discussions.

I'll start I, Claudius in a couple of weeks. First I need to read another book for my real-life book club.
I thought it was a great book when I read it 5 years ago, and I'm glad so many of you share that opinion. I just got back from Hawaii, but I, Claudius didn't arrive in time for my vacation. Instead, I read Colin Falconer's The Sultan's Harem, an escapist novel involving the women surrounding Ottoman Sultan Sleyman that had some rough plot similarities to I, Claudius. |

Incidentally, Julian, thanks for suggesting this book for the quarterly reading. (It was you, wasn't it?) It's one that I always meant to get around to reading, and I'm enjoying it immensely.

I went to Barnes and Noble yesterday to kill some time, and I sat down and read the first two chapters of I, Claudius. I have to say it didn't strike my fancy. I was going to order it through Amazon, but not anymore.

I have read it. Thought it was very dramatic and enjoyable, though I'm not sure it coincides with a historical angle. It is fun, though, and since we know it's a novel, maybe that's all we should take it for.
Loved the tv series. Where taxi drivers never stop talking
