I am in! I have started re-reading and am on chapter three. I read it and enjoyed it many years ago and am happy to read it again along with BookTalk members. In fact, I think there are some posts in reference to this book in our science forum. I will go search there and bump any relevant threads.

I'll be joining in later. I just got the book in yesterday's mail and haven't cracked it yet.

Just picked it up. Sounds promising, I just hope the science isn't too out of date. We already know that the differences are a little more pronounced than Diamond thought back in 92.

Yup, just not yet. I'm without proper net access.
Now I haven't read the book itself, so I'm going off the cover blurb, but it makes reference to humans sharing 98% of their genotype with chimps. Recent evidence suggests that this actually more like 96% if my memory suggests. I'll post on this at a later date, when I've decent net access. Full of Porn*

Here's a couple of articles that cite the newer 96% figure:

Seems the concensus is still the same though...the similarities are far more interesting than the differences. And Diamond wrote this before the genomes were sequenced no? And to be that close...

I bought the book this week, before I knew about this site. I am interested in the development of our human society from its animal roots and the existence of our animal roots in our (current) predicament.
I have never tried this before and am looking forward to seeing what develops. secretions.net |

What a dissapointing turnout. This was a really good book though.

I agree, Mr. P. I think part of the problem was the last section -- it seemed to be mostly a preamble to his later books, which have already been read by the group. We had some decent action for the first sections...

I did notice the thesis for the later books buried in the latter chapters.
We should have started with this one out of all his books. They are all excellent. His writing is very accessible, IMO. Mr. P. I made the mistake of ordering all three books - The Third Chimpanzee, Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse - at the same time. And, of course, once they got here I had to read them all. Actually, it was no mistake. I found all three books to be very well done. Diamond does a remarkable job of pulling in information from a variety of resources and assembling it in a manner that is informative and engaging. We need more writers like this, people who can give us a look at the whole tapestry rather than focusing on a single thread or panel.
Alas, I spent so much time reading the books, I didn't participate as much as I had intended in the discussion of of this one. George "Godlessness is not about denying the existence of nonsensical beings. It is the starting point for living life without them."
